 Facebook

Facebook is a social networking website that was launched on February 4, 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg. It was initially only available to students at Harvard University, but was later expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. It has since become one of the largest and most popular social networking sites in the world, with more than 2.7 billion active users as of the third quarter of 2020.

Users of Facebook can create a personal profile, add other users as friends, and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. Additionally, users can join common-interest user groups, organized by workplace, school or college, or other characteristics, and categorize their friends into lists such as "People From Work" or "Close Friends". Users can also use various social networking features, such as the "Like" button, which allows users to show appreciation for posts, photos, and links, and the "Share" button, which allows users to post a link to a news article or other content on their own profile.

In addition to personal profiles, Facebook also allows users to create pages for businesses, organizations, and public figures. These pages can be liked by other users, and the business or organization can use the page to share updates and promotional content.

Facebook has faced controversy over the years for its handling of user data and privacy. In 2018, it was revealed that the political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica had accessed the data of millions of Facebook users without their knowledge or consent, leading to criticism and regulatory investigations. Facebook has also been criticized for its role in the spread of misinformation and fake news, and for its lack of action against hate speech and other forms of harmful content. Despite these controversies, Facebook remains a highly influential platform, with a significant impact on the way people communicate and consume information online.
